Waiheke Community Art Gallery
Waiheke Island is more than beaches and vineyards — it’s a place of deep creativity. Home to one of the most vibrant artistic communities in New Zealand, the island has long been a sanctuary for painters, sculptors, designers, and makers who draw inspiration from its natural beauty and peaceful pace.
From contemporary art spaces to intimate home-based studios, Waiheke’s art galleries are as diverse and expressive as the people who live here. Whether you’re an art collector, a casual browser, or simply curious, you’ll find something that moves you.
Waiheke Community Art Gallery – Te Whare Taonga o WaihekeLocated in Oneroa, the Waiheke Community Art Gallery is the heart of the island’s arts scene. This professionally curated space showcases a rotating programme of exhibitions by both established and emerging artists from Waiheke and across New Zealand.
The gallery is also known for its national-level events, including:
The Walker & Hall Waiheke Art Award
The Small Sculpture Prize
The biennial Perpetual Guardian Sculpture on the Gulf
Its on-site gift shop features a thoughtfully selected collection of jewellery, ceramics, glass, books, and textiles — all made by local artists and craftspeople.
[ s p a c e ] Contemporary Art GallerySituated in the centre of Oneroa Village, SPACE Gallery is a collective of eight professional Waiheke artists, each bringing their own style and medium to the space. The gallery features a mix of contemporary and figurative art, including:
Abstract and landscape paintings
Sculpture
Ceramics
Mixed media
Jewellery and small works
With four distinct exhibition areas, visitors can expect an ever-evolving display of fresh ideas, often with the chance to meet the artists in person.
SPACE is not just a gallery; it’s a conversation between artists and the island — vibrant, thought-provoking, and deeply rooted in place.
Gabriella Lewenz Studio GalleryNestled among olive trees in Church Bay, Gabriella Lewenz’s Studio Gallery offers a deeply personal and serene encounter with abstract art. Her work is inspired by the landscape and light of Waiheke, and often evokes themes of home, belonging, and transformation.
Visitors are welcome by appointment and can explore both the artist’s home studio and gallery space, which includes a Mediterranean-style courtyard and gardens. It’s as much a spiritual and aesthetic experience as it is an artistic one.
Sculpture on the GulfSculpture on the Gulf is one of New Zealand’s most significant outdoor art exhibitions and is held every two years along the coastal walkway from Matiatia to Church Bay. This event brings together some of the country’s most respected sculptors, who create site-specific installations along the cliffside trail.
It’s a truly immersive way to experience art — surrounded by sea views, native bush, and birdsong. The works are often large-scale, interactive, and thought-provoking, making this a highlight of Waiheke’s cultural calendar.
Waiheke Art Map – Your Self-Guided Gallery TourWaiheke’s art isn’t just tucked away in galleries — it’s scattered across the island in studios, sculpture trails, and surprising public spaces. To help you explore it all, the Waiheke Art Map outlines a self-guided route connecting galleries, open studios, and installations.
You can pick one up at the Waiheke Community Art Gallery or download it online.
