Tucked into the heart of Oneroa Village, The Island Grocer is one of those places that quickly becomes part of your Waiheke routine. Whether you’re stocking the fridge for a weekend on the island, putting together a picnic for the beach, grabbing lunch on the go or searching for something a little special for dinner, there’s a lot packed into this much-loved local grocer.

Family owned and operated, The Island Grocer has built its offering around quality food and thoughtful sourcing, with a strong emphasis on organic and spray-free produce, locally made products and artisan food from both Waiheke and further afield. Shelves are filled with pantry staples and harder-to-find specialty ingredients, alongside fresh fruit and vegetables, daily bread, cheeses, meats, wine, craft beer, fair-trade drinks and plenty of treats.

It’s also a particularly good place to discover some of what Waiheke produces locally. Island-made goods sit alongside carefully selected New Zealand and international products, making it as useful for locals doing the weekly shop as it is for visitors wanting to take a little taste of Waiheke home with them.

Then there’s the food ready to eat. The in-store Merchants café serves coffee, cold-pressed juices and smoothies alongside salads, pastries, sweet treats and generously filled deli-style sandwiches, with vegan and gluten-free choices also part of the mix. Picnic options make it an easy stop before heading down to nearby Oneroa Beach.

For entertaining, The Island Grocer also offers catering including lunchboxes, platters and charcuterie, while freshly shucked local Te Matuku oysters have also featured among its offerings.

Located at 110 Ocean View Road, it’s right in Oneroa and easy to drop into while exploring the village. Current listings show it open seven days a week, although I'd confirm hours before publishing them as the sources differ slightly on closing time.

Part deli, part wholefoods store, part café and very much a local favourite, The Island Grocer is a handy little introduction to the way Waiheke likes to eat: fresh, local and very good.
